Sunday, December 19, 2004 The Indian Express UK warning on export of electronic waste to India
The British Environment Agency has gone where the Indian Government is yet to by issuing a strict warning to companies in England and Wales involved in the illegal export of electronic waste to India.
In a notice issued this week, the BEA warned companies from England and Wales to comply with waste export norms under the ‘Waste Shipments Regulation’ or risk prosecution by the Environment Agency (EA). The warning comes as the EA announced it was stepping up activity to identify illegal exports, following a report by the Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling identifying some 23,000 tonnes of waste that may be being shipped to non-OECD countries, including India.
The EA said it is cracking down on illegal waste export by setting up a special enforcement team to carry out random inspections at ports across England and Wales; and also helping to clamp down on illegal shipments at 25 ports across 11 European countries.
